Rural NL Drinking Water Project team members were present at the International Marine and Freshwater Environments Conference in St. John’s, NL on August 8, as presenters in the special session on “Water Safety and Public Health”. The first part of this session was chaired by Dr. Kelly Vodden and Sarah Minnes. Kalen presented in the first session. His presentation was entitled, “Potential Health Risks of Contaminants in Private Groundwater Sources in Newfoundland and Labrador”. Dr. Maura Hanrahan also presented a paper in the first session. Maura’s paper entitled “Water Insecurity in Indigenous Canada: A Case Study of Illness, Neglect, and Urgency”, was co-authored with Dr. Atanu Sarkar of Memorial’s Faculty of Medicine and Amy Hudson of NunatuKavut Community Council. Maura chaired the second part of the session for team members Dr. Kelly Vodden and Sarah Minnes. Sarah gave a presentation entitled, “Sustainable Drinking Water Management- A Tall Order for Municipal Governments”, which covered overall findings from the NL Rural Drinking Water Project. Kelly gave a presentation entitled, “Water Security and the Role of Community Organizations and Residents in Indian Bay”. This presentation was co-authored by MAEP student Steve Holisko.
